Sometimes, perhaps often, we get too caught up in what something our readers or peers may say about our work. We lose sight of what and why we write, blog, or share. At times like that, we need to step back, remove ourselves from other people’s chatter and re-centre. Re-focus ourselves.
Re-focus ourselves. Stay true to our vision and goals.
So, next time you feel like you need to change to accommodate the people around you, resist. Instead, encourage yourself to look deeper, farther, further inside. Explore and appreciate your unique way of seeing the world, because it’s through that lens that you’ll find your most powerful creative voice.
Late, by myself, in the boat of myself,
no light and no land anywhere,
cloudcover thick. I try to stay
just above the surface, yet I’m already under
and living within the ocean.
~ Rumi, from “Saladin’s Begging Bowl,” The Essential Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks New Expanded Edition (HarperOne, 2004)
